Infrastructure and posture: SwanIT has received ISO environmental and quality management certificates
Tuulia Virhiä

A few years ago, we found ourselves in a situation where great and authentic work needed to be credibly verified. At the same time, SwanIT had begun to grow rapidly, and reflections on how to structure the work became relevant.
Certification was a natural idea for us, given our company's history in the certification business. We strongly believe in evidence, and, of course, we wanted to show our customers that our operations are as we claim: sustainable and high-quality. Proven.
We evaluated dozens of possible certifications and considered which ones would add value to both our customers and us. The internationally recognised ISO-certifiable management systems were ultimately the clear choice for us, as they specifically required us to develop them. We were sorely lacking structure and a consistent direction for what we were doing, which would create strong pillars of support and the prerequisites for growth.
The environment is a very central part of our everyday work and our sustainability strategy. On the other hand, we are an IT service provider, and quality verification, monitoring, and especially improvement are prerequisites for the customer experience we envision. That is how we started our journey to build ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 9001:2015-certified environmental and quality management systems.
ISO14001:2015 and ISO9001:2015
The systems were built in less than a year. It is easy to think of certification as a plaque obtained by maintaining a reasonable status quo, but this is not the case, at least not with ISOs. In practice, the journey to certification required several hundred hours of work by several people.
Writing out and partially creating processes, evaluating partners, reviewing our values and vision, and clarifying areas of responsibility. In addition, reviewing and analysing each service and activity, developing and brainstorming metrics and measurement options for measurable things, implementing new tools, hundreds of pages of documentation, dozens of hours of training and workshops, and developing and especially implementing improvement mechanisms. Ongoing work is continuous work and requires the participation of the entire organisation.
The journey was intense, but it resulted in a common, consistent way of working for the company, a clear standard for everything we do, and a spirit of continuous improvement that is evident every day. In addition, thanks to their familiarity, the standards effectively and concisely communicate our commitment to quality and environmental protection to our customers.
A rolling stone gathers no moss, and SwanIT is moving forward at a fast pace as a pioneer in more sustainable IT.
