Finland's Overconsumption Day is already April 12th — this is what it means
Apr 10, 2024

Did you know that Finland's Overconsumption Day 2024 is on Friday, April 12? At SwanIT, we are working to push that day forward. Our mission is to change the entire IT market, and we can do it with the help of the IT circular economy.
Finland's Overconsumption Day means that our consumption already at this point in the year exceeds the Earth's ability to produce renewable natural resources. The sad fact is that we Finns are among the world's highest consumers, as we consume about four times the amount that would be sustainable within the Earth's limits.
The purpose of SwanIT's entire operation is to create an alternative to traditional thinking in IT infrastructure solutions. Our work combines sustainable and environmentally friendly operations, strong experience, and decades of expertise in the IT sector.
IT is still seen as a separate environmental issue that is not even thought about. Or when was the last time your company thought about IT's responsibility? It's humane.
We do a lot of great things in IT that make other industries greener, for example, green transition and digitalization. But we have completely forgotten that our IT industry itself is really environmentally heavy.
SwanIT's CEO, Tuulia Virhiä, describes.
We all have devices in our hands every day, and a disposable culture has developed for these devices. We buy new ones every two or three years to replace them. In addition, raw materials do not end up in circulation. These are big problems that we are solving.
Virhiä continues.
The day of overconsumption is calculated as the day on which humans' ecological footprint exceeds the Earth's biocapacity, i.e. its ability to produce renewable natural resources and process greenhouse gas emissions caused by the use of fossil fuels. WWF Finland.
Finland's Overspending Day is already in April
As we can see from the image below, this doesn't look very good. In Finland, the overspending day in 2024 is indeed April 12th. For example, in Norway it is exactly the same day, and in Sweden it is a little over a week later.
Finland's overspending days this decade:
5.4.2020
10.4.2021
31.3.2022
31.3.2023
12.4.2024
